Good morning!!
Thanks for joining us here for the latest edition of our newsletter, where you can share in some of our latest projects, team fun, and all around Metis good news!
In this issue we celebrate the City of Kent, where our World Headquarters has called “home” for over a decade. Kent was recently named Best Hometown by Ohio Magazine. We are so proud to be a part of this community! You haven’t been to Kent recently? Come for a visit! kentbiz.com and mainstreetkent.org are two helpful resources on what there is for you to do here. Stop by and say hi when you’re in town too!
We also celebrate the completion of a few projects highlighted in this newsletter, McAlister’s Deli, Sterling Heights; Ranpak Corp, Painesville, OH; Madison Fire Department, Madison, OH; and Smoothie King, Streetsboro, OH. From commercial ground-up projects to renovations, please reach out to us to assist you with projects large and small now in the planning stages for the new year.
We also had to include finished photos of Low Lodge at Girl Scout Camp Ledgewood in Peninsula, OH. This 55-year-old camp dining hall was in need of a makeover, and WOW did it receive it! In-house architect Paul Romanic led the project, designing the updates including an updated kitchen design with new kitchen equipment, mechanical systems, outdoor dining area, front porch extension, restrooms, floor refinishing, ceiling design/skylights, and so much more. Watch for a before and after feature coming to metisconstruction.com very soon! Thank you to our team members for executing this transformation and the team at GSNEO for selecting Metis for this project!
Last but not least, share in some of our team fun from raising funds and awareness for some of our favorites!
As this newsletter reaches you during the celebration of the holiday season, we hope all is well with you and your teams both at work and home.
Happy Holidays,
Julie Brandle, President

Metis Project Highlights
McAlister’s Deli – Sterling Heights, MI
McAlister’s Deli is an American chain of fast casual restaurants founded in 1989 in Oxford, Mississippi by retired dentist Dr. Don Newcomb. There are currently over 350 locations in 29 states. Metis Construction Services is currently working on it’s sixth McAlister’s Deli project in Avon, OH. The project below features the Sterling Heights, MI location.
Buffalo Wild Wings – Kent, OH
Buffalo Wild Wings downtown Kent, located in the historic Franklin Hotel, now known as Acorn Corner, underwent a transformation before Kent State University students were back in session for the fall semester. Metis Construction Services was a part of the initial build-out of the space and the building’s historic restoration back in 2011. The space has new floors throughout, fresh paint, an updated bar, and all new furniture. Next time you’re exploring downtown Kent stop in and grab some wings and a beer!
Madison Fire Station #2 – Madison, OH
Madison Township Fire Station 2 was funded and built in the mid 1950’s by a citizen group called the “Fire Protective League, Inc.”. This group wanted fire protective services on the North end of the community, and after a levy failed to have one built, the Fire Protective league, Inc. undertook this project. It was later purchased by Madison Township Trustee’s in September of 1956 for $6,424.74 by resolution. Recently Metis Construction Services added on to the existing structure.
Dollar General – Louisville, OH
Throughout the year we’ve worked on Dollar General stores across the country in Washington, Idaho, Illinois and Michigan but our latest Dollar General project concluded closer to home in Louisville, Ohio.
Metis Design in Motion
Girl Scouts Low Lodge – Peninsula, OH
Low Lodge is a spacious dining hall with a full service commercial kitchen, fireplace and as of this year, a climbing wall! Also available for reservation is the commercial kitchen located inside Low Lodge. This facility serves 200 Girl Scouts at a time throughout the summer months when camp is in session.
As the Girl Scout’s Low Lodge neared completion, the Design Team worked with the client to design a fabric sail covering system for the new outdoor dining area. We developed a 3-dimensional model to perform a shadow/shading study to determine the ideal placement for coverage of the patio for afternoon and early evening usage from May thru the end of September. It is offset from the main building to allow natural light to still reach the west facing windows of the dining room. We are looking to have the shade system installed mid to late October.
Metis Moment
John S. Knight House Featured in Properties Magazine
Metis Construction Services is featured in the latest issue of Properties Magazine, for our work and partnership with the Summit County Land Bank. This project was very special to Metis and the Akron Community. The mission to save this historic landmark home and update it into beautiful offices, as well as community space, was no small feat. We are extremely proud of the outcome.
Read the digital version below!
The John S. Knight House was built in Akron, Ohio in 1922 by former longtime Akron Beacon Journal editor and publisher John S. Knight. It was designed by architects Good and Wagner as a six bedroom Tudor Revival home. Good and Wagner also designed Portage Country Club, another Akron landmark. After going through various owners over the years it had recently stood vacant for the past 15 years. That is when the Summit County Land Bank decided to purchase the property. They had outgrown their current office space and had a vision to retrofit this mansion as their new headquarters. The house now has five bathrooms, 15 offices and a meeting room. Maintaining the historical character of the original structure while making it compliant for commercial use presented unique opportunities. The rehabilitation was full scale, interior, exterior, site work and a new garage building.
